How to Apply for Permanent Residency

Now that you have determined which category you need to apply under and where to apply you are now ready to either order the application forms from Citizenship and Immigration Canada or download and print out the forms from their website. A video is also provided on the website to help you fill out your forms.

Make sure you fill out and sign/date all the forms needed for your specific application to avoid delays, some of the forms vary depending on whether you apply in Canada or Outside Canada, there are also region specific forms for Applicants applying Outside Canada.

Once you have filled out all of the forms mail both the Sponsors and Applicants application and supported documents to the required Case Processing Centre.

 Providing Proof of your Relationship


There is a requirement to provide proof that your relationship is Genuine and continuous when applying for Permanent Residency in Canada under the Family Class Application as a Spouse/Common-law Partner or Conjugal Partner in order to enable the Immigration officers processing your application to determine that your Application is Genuine.

Here is an example of the documents you can submit:

  • Joint Bank Accounts
  • Joint Rental Lease
  • Joint Mortgage
  • Insurance Policy with your Spouse/Partner as Beneficiary
  • Joint utilities such as Hydro/ Cable/ Internet/ Telephone
  • Proof of flights/Travel with each other or to each others country of residence 
  • Statutory declarations from family and friends
 
You can also provide proof of living at the same address if you do not have many joint accounts/Utilities.

Providing an accurate account of your relationship from when you both met each other, how your relationship evolved and what your plans are for your future together is also recommended, provided documented proof to back up your story. Immigration officers primary concern is for the safety of Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents living in Canada it is your job to prove to Immigration that you are not a threat to Canada and its Residents and that you are a genuine applicant.
